Who are the team behind the USYD Youth Mental Health Study?
We’re a team of queer and ally researchers from the University of Sydney, Western Sydney University, UTS and UNSW. We care about making health and support services more accessible, inclusive, fair, and empowering for diverse young people.
This project was led by Dr Horas Wong, Senior Lecturer in Nursing (Social Science), with Vicky Xu, Research Associate, at the University of Sydney.
Together, we worked on a project to better understand the mental health needs of LGBTQ+ young people of colour in South-Western Sydney. Using co-design, our research team, community partners and young people came together to build a multilingual online information hub, created just for you.
This website was co-designed through the Designathon by Sanjith, Gauri and Dimitri, who were the winning team. We are deeply grateful for their ideas, creativity, and insight, which have helped shape this project from the beginning. They have continued their involvement as ongoing consultants as the resource has developed.

The Designathon
To make sure this hub actually reflects what young people want and need, we ran a Designathon.
A Designathon brings together young people from the community to brainstorm, create and pitch new health ideas. The winning team’s idea was chosen by a panel of judges from health, community, and advocacy groups to become the information hub. The designathon winners also stayed involved afterwards to help shape and build the hub that you’re using right now.
